The Washington DC chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC-DC) held a prognostication event on Sep. 15 2009. Speakers included: Leslie Daigle, Chief Internet Technology Officer, Internet Society; Eric Burger, Chief Technology Officer, Neustar; Steve Crocker, Internet pioneer and CEO, Shinkuro, Inc.

OneWebDay Celebration in Washington Square Park

Where: Holley Plaza, Washington Square Park NYC (just west of the fountain)

New York, NY – In addition to the annual OneWebDay celebration of the Internet in all its diversity, which will again be held in Washington Sq. Park on Sep 22, New York netizens will be active in the coming weekend participating in two pre-OneWebDay events, a symposium and a party on Saturday Sep 19.

Below the jump find video from the NYC Community Fiber Project meeting held at DCTV on Sep 9 2009.

It is split into 5 segments:
1. Gathering – participants identify themselves and there is some preliminary discussion.
2. Presentation: Lou Klepner fleshes out the Community Fiber concept and reports on progress thus far;
3. Discussion: Some lively discourse!
4. Background: Bruce Kushnick details the incumbent’s egregious lack of fulfillment of their obligations/promises.
5. Technology: Prof. Djafar Mynbaev gives a brief overview of the nuts and bolts of photonic communication.

The Ecology Center and Tekserve are partnering to recycle electronic waste (“e-waste”) from New York City residents. Bring your unwanted or broken electronics to the collection event in front of Tekserve to have them recycled responsibly. A list of acceptable materials can be found here. They do not accept home appliances such as microwaves or refrigerators or any electronics from businesses.

The NTIA and RUS have published the database of BTOP applications in Round 1 at
http://www.ntia.doc.gov/broadbandgrants/applications/search.cfm

Of $7.2 billion allotted to broadband under the ARRA approximately $2.4 billion from RUS and up to $1.6 billion from NTIA is available in this first grant round.
